For many, the allure of entrepreneurship glitters with promises of liberation. We envision escaping the daily grind, the rigid schedules, and the feeling of building someone else's empire. This desire to escape from obligation – from the alarm clock, the demanding boss, the unfulfilling tasks – often fuels the initial leap. I've seen countless individuals, brimming with this escape-driven energy, pour their savings and their souls into new ventures, only to find themselves hitting the wall of burnout and frustration.
But what if I told you that true entrepreneurial joy doesn't lie in escaping something, but in embracing something else entirely? What if the secret to a fulfilling and sustainable entrepreneurial journey is not "freedom from chains," but "freedom to a crown"?
My own path is a testament to this profound shift in mindset. For years, I engaged myself in a printing business, a venture born from my husband's dream. While I poured in the hours, the passion simply wasn't there. Each morning felt like another obligation, another cog in a machine that wasn't designed by me, for me. The fulfilment was absent, and the eventual burnout was inevitable, even impacting my marriage. It was a stark reminder that even with hard work and dedication, a lack of alignment with one's true purpose can lead to exhaustion and disappointment.
The most beautiful chains are those we choose to wear for a purpose we believe in, not those imposed upon us. Something shifted when I embarked on a journey as a Coach, Trainer, Speaker, and Business Coach. The change was palpable, immediate, and exhilarating. For the past eight years, I have loved every single moment of this journey. Even when the financial rewards weren't immediately apparent, I felt an unshakeable eagerness to jump out of bed. I would willingly dedicate 14, 16 and sometimes even 20 hours a day to my work. Why? Because I had – and still have – 100% confidence that I am chasing the right purpose. My work adds value to my life, to the world, and my hereafter.
This is the essence of overflow: the freedom to work on my vision, the freedom to set my own schedule, the freedom to live a purposeful life. It's the freedom to align your efforts with your deepest values and passions.
I recall a particularly challenging period when I was building my coaching practice. There were months when the income was negligible, and self-doubt would occasionally whisper in my ear. However, the sheer joy of helping others unlock their potential, the intellectual stimulation of crafting new training programmes, and the invigorating experience of speaking to a captivated audience drowned out any negativity. I was operating from a place of pure passion, and that fuel was limitless.
Another anecdote that comes to mind is when I was invited to speak at a school on a remote island in the Maldives. The logistics were complex, the travel arduous, and the compensation modest. Yet, the moment I stepped onto that stage and saw the eager faces of the attendees, hungry for knowledge and guidance, every ounce of effort felt profoundly worthwhile. This wasn't about avoiding something; it was about embracing the opportunity to inspire and empower.
And then there was the time, not long ago, when I found myself in a hospital bed after shoulder surgery. The physical discomfort was significant, and most would expect a period of complete rest and disconnection from the world. Yet, lying there, an idea sparked. Not out of obligation, not because I had a deadline, but out of a genuine love for my audience. I picked up my phone and recorded a video. It was a raw, authentic message, born from the desire to share insights and encourage others, even in challenging circumstances, to find their light. This wasn't resistance; it was resonance. I wasn't fighting my way out of the situation; I was flowing into who I truly am – a person dedicated to helping others shine, no matter the circumstances. The truest freedom is not in having no obligations, but in choosing the obligations that nourish your soul.
My vision is to ignite a flame of hope in every soul I encounter and help create a world where joy is contagious and every smile is a sign of inner freedom. Through storytelling that stirs the heart, I challenge limiting beliefs, nurture trust in Allah, and awaken a belief in one's God-given potential. My mission is to champion a thriving coaching culture in the Maldives—one conversation at a time, one that inspires, heals, and transforms lives from the inside out. This isn't just a career; it's a calling. The power within this dream, this vision, is what propels me forward. It required me to let go of conventional expectations, to trust in a higher purpose. And true to His infinite mercy, Allah SWT has always abundantly blessed my life.
So, how can you make this transition from "surviving" to "embodiment" in your own entrepreneurial journey?
Ideas to Cultivate an "Overflow" Mindset:
-
Identify Your Core Values and Purpose: Before launching into any venture, take the time to reflect deeply on what truly matters to you. What problems do you genuinely want to solve? What impact do you want to make? When your business aligns with your core values, it ceases to be just a job and becomes a vehicle for your purpose (Covey, 1989). This self-awareness is the bedrock of freedom to.
-
Define Your "Why" Beyond Escape: While escaping a dissatisfying situation might be the initial spark, delve deeper into the positive motivations. What do you want to create? What kind of life do you want to build? Focusing on creation rather than avoidance shifts your energy from reactive to proactive (Sinek, 2011).
-
Embrace the Journey, Not Just the Destination: Understand that entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be challenges and setbacks. When you are driven by purpose-powered peace – the joy of the creative process, the learning, the growth – you are more resilient in the face of adversity. Each step becomes a part of your unfolding story, not just a hurdle to overcome (Dweck, 2006).
-
Prioritise Impact Over Income (Initially): While financial success is important, making it your sole driving force can lead to disappointment and burnout if it doesn't materialise quickly. Focus on the value you create for others and the positive impact you have on them. The income often follows the impact (Grant, 2013). This shift in focus allows for sustainable motivation.
-
Cultivate a Nourished Mindset: View challenges as opportunities for learning and development, rather than insurmountable obstacles. This perspective is crucial for sustained motivation and joy in the entrepreneurial journey. A "freedom to" mindset thrives on continuous improvement and the belief that your abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work (Dweck, 2006). Focus on the gardener's theory and realise the natural stages it takes to produce any fruit.
-
Embrace the "NO ONE CARES" Theory: In a world obsessed with applause, the fear of judgment can be paralysing. Many aspiring entrepreneurs delay their dreams, not because they lack skill, but because they fear what others might think. Social expectations become invisible chains, keeping them stuck in roles they've outgrown. But here's the truth: no one cares as much as you think they do. And that's liberating.
When you embrace the NO ONE CARES Theory, you stop performing for approval and start becoming for purpose. You permit yourself to evolve, to experiment, and to show up imperfectly but authentically. Research shows that fear of negative evaluation—rooted in social anxiety—can significantly limit autonomy and self-expression, especially in collectivist cultures where conformity is prized (Acharya, 2025). But those who break free from these expectations report greater personal freedom, creativity, and fulfilment.
Always bear in mind that you don't need the world's permission to become. You need the courage to begin—and when you do, when you embody your purpose and show that your mission is worthy, the very people you once feared would judge you will applaud, support, and follow your light.
Entrepreneurship isn't about sacrifice; it's about self-discovery wrapped in purpose. My journey, spanning from cashier at the Bank of Maldives to Manager of Human Resources at Villa College, Owner of Alpha Print, and then to becoming a Coach, Trainer, Speaker, and Business Coach, has been one of profound transformation. It's a journey from the confines of obligation to the boundless expanse of overflow. It's about waking up each morning, not with a sense of dread, but with an exhilarating anticipation for the work that awaits. It's about grinding it out, not because you have to, but because you absolutely love what you do. This love, this purpose, is the ultimate fuel for building your empire, one joyous, fulfilling step at a time. In guiding others to rise, I uncovered the parts of myself I never knew were missing.
